It is with amazement and humility that one considers the magnitude of God’s greatness and the dignity that the Creator bestows on mankind.  The Psalmist wrote … “O LORD, our Lord, your greatness is seen in all the world! Your praise reaches up to the heavens; it is sung by children and babies. You are safe and secure from all your enemies; you stop anyone who opposes you. When I look at the sky, which you have made, at the moon and the stars, which you set in their places — what is man, that you think of him; mere man, that you care for him? Yet you made him inferior only to yourself; you crowned him with glory and honor. You appointed him ruler over everything you made; you placed him over all creation: sheep and cattle, and the wild animals too; the birds and the fish and the creatures in the seas. O LORD, our Lord, your greatness is seen in all the world” (Ps 8 TEV)!  Man was created and placed in a position of preeminence over all other earthly creation. Yet, because Adam chose to go against God’s revealed will, his exalted position was usurped by the Adversary. Such was the spiritual condition of mankind -- separated from God and without human remedy, at the time that the humanity of Christ entered history for the purpose of going to the Cross and redeeming mankind from his fallen estate.  The writer of the Hebrews reveals that Psalm 8 was more than a reference to mankind, for its full meaning spoke of Messiah.  “But we do see Him who has been made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings” (Heb 2:9-10 NASB). The Plan of God for the spiritual deliverance of humanity from the bondage of sin required that man’s debt of sin to a righteous God be paid in full.  God Himself established the principle of redemption in which the innocent would die for the guilty as pictured in the death of an animal and whose skins provided covering for the individual. Thus it was necessary for Christ to suffer first on the Cross to satisfy man’s debt and be reconciled to God. With the Cross accomplished,  then would come the be crown.  The Apostle Paul, in writing to the churches in Philippi exclaims the Father’s pronouncement of honor and glory upon the Son … “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil 2:9-11 NKJV).  God, always giving in grace to mankind more than what can be imagined, then elevates those who have placed their faith in Christ to a position higher than the angels.  “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation” (Heb 1:14 NIV)?  Recall the words of John on the Isle of Patmos while imprisoned for preaching the gospel. He was given the privilege of writing the Revelation of Jesus Christ.  So important was this final word from God that an angel was sent to guard the message that John would pen. John describes bowing before the angel … “I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he [angel] said to me, "Don't do it! I am a fellow servant of yours and of your brothers, all those who hold to the truth that Jesus revealed. Worship God" (Rev 19:10 TEV)!  So the question is still asked -- What is man that Thou art mindful of him?  The believer in Christ shares in the exalted position of His Savior. “In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:6-8).
