One of the magnificent words in Scripture is FAITH. It has three meanings. The first definition of “pistis” is faithfulness -- that which causes trust and faith. It is often translated, faithfulness, reliability, proof and pledge.  Surely God is characterized as faithful for His character and Word are above reproach.  “This is a FAITHFUL saying and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (I Timothy 1:15). The second meaning of the word “faith” is the act of believing. It is translated by several words -- faith, trust, believe -- to place one’s confidence.  An example of this use is found in John’s gospel  … “but as many as received Him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that BELIEVE on His name”  (John 1:12). The third use the word “faith” refers to the body of truth, the content of Scripture, that which is believed, the revealed teachings from God.  In the epistle of Hebrews, the writer refers to “faith” extensively in chapter eleven. There its primary use is that which was believed, the truth revealed given to those listed and how they responded to God’s revelation. As the Holy Spirit recognizes certain ones of Old Testament days, He has the writer of Hebrews introduce each honoree with the words”  “by faith.”

Hebrews 11

4…by faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice

8…by faith Abraham sojourned in the land of promise

20…by faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau

21…by faith Jacob when he was dying blessed both the sons of Joseph

22…by faith Joseph when he died ….gave commandment concerning his bones

23…by faith Moses …was hid of his parents

24…by faith Moses ...refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter

31…by faith the harlot Rahab perished not

This roll of honor records for us individuals who simply took God at His Word.  They were not “super saints,” just available vessels who believed by faith what God said.  Scripture gives us the content upon which these placed their faith and confidence -- the eternal Word of God. Those who ridicule believers sometimes say that Christians have blind faith; nothing could be further from the Truth.  Personal FAITH is placed in Christ, who is revealed in the FAITH, the Unchanging Word of God, and that Word is given to us by the very God of Heaven who is called FAITHFUL.
