The first doorway to the west is Cumberland Gap, at the borders of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia. Daniel Boone explored the path with a team of frontiersmen and made it accessible for pioneers to journey into the western frontiers of Kentucky and Tennessee. Today the Gap has a 4600 foot tunnel for passage.

Adam and Eve and their descendants were lost in the woods, unable to find their way out of the land of Sin. But God had mercy and sent His Son to lead the way out of “the land of the shadow of death” (Isaiah 9:2) into the realm of light and life eternal. He is the Messiah of whom Isaiah and the other prophets had spoken.

Jesus did more than show us the way to life; He Himself was – and still is – the Way, the only way, to the Father. He became the Pioneer and Perfecter of our faith when He, endured the cross and then rose again to assure us of the resurrection of our bodies to life eternal.

Human beings are limited in what they can do. Christopher Columbus and Daniel Boone could open up parts of the world for human habitation, giving economically depressed people a new lease on life. But they could not be saviors from sin and givers of eternal life. Only Jesus Christ is both Giver and Guide for passage through this world, en route to the better country. He spans the gap.

…they were longing for a better country-a heavenly one... prepared for them. Hebrews 11:16
